Worst Hotel - not suitable for family stay

Charring Cross Hotel used to be one of the go to places in Ooty some years ago. Also located in the city center, you generally expect something really good and comfortable. Sorry to say but it has been a worst experience. This hotel is meant only for bachelors and for a very low budget. Mind you, the room rent is about INR 1,500 per night for a normal room which is not cheap by the way!! We stayed on 17th April night. Location - very good, in the city center. You can just walk around and find hotels, shopping, etc., Room - very very poor. The room that we were given was used by someone else i guess. There was groundnuts strewn all around. The room was very damp and smelly. There was lot of dust on the blanket...the dust was rising even with just placing the hand on the blanket. We immediately asked for change of room and were given. The new room also was not any better. The pillows were stained. The bathroom did not have a health faucet, strange to find no health faucet in this era. The hot water that was supplied in the bathroom was smelly to say the least and looked like the lake water being directly pumped to the hotel. There was hole in the window glass and cold air was billowing in from the outside. When asked to repair, the person in the reception gave us gyan saying, "Madam, in Ooty there is no air, so if you are getting fresh air why you worry?" After getting into an argument they did some patchy work. The room door was very creaky and it felt like a room door from a horror movie. The room latch was not working and we had to use manual lock & key The switchboards look like coming off any moment and I was lucky not to get an electric shock when using the switch board. There is not lift facility in the hotel. How do take elderly people to such a hotel and all the rooms are either on 1st or 2nd floor. How can elderly people climb up the stairs? Overall a very bad experience, we wanted to get out of the hotel even without taking bath the next day lest we incur some infection.

Expect very less of this place, else you will be disappointed. Pros and Cons below: 1. Available within a pretty decent budget. 2. Highly populated area - If you like a crowded place on your vacation. But you get pretty much everything in your vicinity ranging from local fruits to international brands/items. 3. Rooms are not up to the mark. 3 people bed is a lie, only 2 can sleep on it. 4. Rooms get pretty cold at night(which is a good thing). Now the cons: 1. Worst service ever. 2. The water heater is not in our control and hence you need to call reception and tell them how many people are staying and they switch on the geyser. Doesn't matter if u said 4 people, water will be hot only for 1. Worst experience in my life. Imagine taking a bath in cold water on a hill station. 3. Hotel attached to it is the Amaravathi hotel, which is the 2nd worst thing after room service. We had ordered dinner and they totally ignored it. When we called back to check, he says no one ordered this at all. 4. Food is very expensive and quality/service is not up to the mark. 5. We waited 45 minutes for just roti and chicken curry. 6. The extra bed that we ordered was so worthless that it was almost as if we were sleeping on the floor.

Power Cut from 10 pm - 6 am

i had a tough time in staying in this hotel. Main reason being the power cut which is done voluntarily by the hotel employees from 10 pm - 6 am. With gloomy rooms and hotel(yes hotel doesn't have power either)....you are made to sleep in a dark night and you will not be able to charge your mobile either.. during the 8 hours of power cut. I booked the hotel because of central location, but was terribly disappointed.

Restaurant is spacious but food quality is average. The staff seems to be reluctant to work as they were not ready to come and take order. :-) Not all the menu is available all the time. The lunch will be available only after 12.30 PM. No breakfast available.
